Browse for available books by clicking on the words Advanced Search.

Now that you know which files types work with your device, go to Format in Advanced Search and choose a compatible file type from the pull down list.

Also, place a check mark in the box next to the words “Only show titles with copies available. This will save you time and patience. Click on Search and a list will appear.
Once you have chosen an item to check out, you will need to add it to your cart. Click on the title of the item. Then, click on the words “Add to My Cart” next to the file type compatible with your device.

Any titles you add to your cart will remain in the cart for 30 minutes. During that time, no one else can check that title out. You may check out 10 items at a time. Once you are ready to check out, click “Proceed to Checkout”.

Once on the next page, you get to choose how long the books check out for: 7, 14, 21 days.

Then click “Confirm Check Out.”

The page will change to reflect the items you have checked out. Under the titles and next to the cover of the book, there will be a button that says either “Download” or “Get for Kindle” depending on the file type you chose. Click on this button.

The next step depends on what type of device you have, and what file format you are downloading.
KINDLE
If you are downloading a Kindle Book to a Kindle (Any Type) or to a Kindle reading App, the library website will redirect you to Amazon.com. You will need to be signed in to Amazon.com to have the ability to download the item to your device. Once you are at that website, click the yellow button to “Get Library Book.”

The Kindle book will then download via wifi to your device Home screen. If you do not have wifi, you may use the USB cord to transfer the title to your Kindle or portable device. The directions are clearly stated on the confirmation screen.
If you have a Kindle Fire, you will need to Sync the device to “see” the library book.
If you are using a portable device running a Kindle App, your library book has downloaded to the Archives section. You will need to download it from the Archives in order to read it.
OTHER E-READERS
All other e-readers must use the Adobe Digital Editions software (free for download from the library ebook website) and a USB cable to download ebooks to their device. The Rice Lake Public Library offers free handouts and other tutorials on how to download this software and use it to manage your reading experience.
